What is File Transfer Protocol?

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a protocol that is needed to transfer files/folders from your local computer to a remote server. For example, if you want to publish a Website, an FTP program is needed to transfer all Web content you create to the Web host server. FTP programs are also used to upload and manage files in hosting account directories. FTP Programs such as FileZilla, Cute FTP or SmartFTP can also be used to upload files/folders to your Web site. You will need to access the FTP Account Manager page to find your Username and password as this information is needed to install the FTP program.
